A walk through this neighborhood is a feast for the eyes. Most of the neighborhood has been landmarked, given that the architecture is both historic and spectacular. This is one of the more affluent neighborhoods in New York and it is privately owned. You won’t find any commercial businesses around here as this is the price that is paid for an extremely rural setting in the middle of New York City. If you want to get essentials for Fifi, you will need to travel down into Marble Hill, Riverdale, or Park Hill. Because the land is privately owned by the housing association, they can dictate what is built in the neighborhood.

Weather for walking is mostly good in the spring, summer, and fall with some extreme temperatures possible in the summer. Winters tend to be cold and often snowy, so you may find days that are not walkable here, especially considering the elevations in certain areas.

Much of Fieldston is on a hill, making walking challenging. Windy roads and the lack of any set pattern to them makes it difficult to avoid hills as well. Some roads are more level such as Fieldston Rd., but once you get off the main road, you quickly find the hills again. The best way to approach walking in Fieldstone is to make sure that you plan your route out ahead of time.

You will find that it is the more traveled roads in Fieldston that have sidewalks and because the roads are very windy and hilly, you will need to be very careful if you plan to do a lot of walking in this neighborhood. The views are amazing and the neighborhood has a very rural feel to it. Still, a large number of old trees and the grassy medians on the more traveled roads makes walking here very peaceful and pleasant.

There is only one small park here in Fieldston. Brust Park is a very pleasant space with lots of trees, an abundance of shade, and beautiful trails that cut through it. It is like walking through a little piece of heavy dense forest, so it makes a wonderful place to stop.

Right next to Fieldstone is Van Cortland Park which has a great deal of forest land with trails to explore. There is around 600 acres of forest land waiting to be explored with 150-year-old trees, and 200 million-year-old rocky outcrops. With a total of five trails, there are nearly seven miles of walking that can be done on wooded trails. There are also three dog parks in Van Cortland with one at Broadway and 252nd Street, another at Gates Place and West Gun Hill Road, and a final one at Oneida Avenue and Van Cortlandt Park East.
