Soundview is one of the areas in Bronx that has had a very mixed history. Like much of the Southern Bronx, it is home to some tenement buildings, but in more recent history, row housing has been built in an effort to attract an economically diverse group. Once a rough neighborhood, today the area is described as working-class. Businesses are not plentiful but there are many places to stop for a bite to eat around the outskirts as well as a scattering of grocery stores.

While you won’t find Sparky’s amenities directly in Soundview, there are a couple of pet stores and vets just outside so you will not have to travel far to pick up those extras for your favorite four-legged companion. There is a local dog park, so your pup has not been completely forgotten.

Weather is rarely a problem in Soundview and you will find that spring through fall is generally very nice for walking.

Terrain is not an issue you or Sparky will need to concern yourselves with in Soundview. With mostly flat roads and only the occasional small hill, all fitness levels and ages will have no problem with navigating the neighborhood. If anything, the constant flat ground may be a frustration or create a sense of boredom. If that is the case, rest assured that a detour in a different direction, mixing up walks with hikes in the local dog park, or increasing speed and difficulty can, in fact, take the boredom away.

In the tenement areas, there are sidewalks but plenty of paths between the building for walking. The paths are a better option, in any case, simply because they are lined with grass which your dog will appreciate. At the west side of Soundview, you will find mostly apartments above businesses with a few small areas of row housing.

Fortunately for four-legged residents of Soundview, there is a 200-acre park that more than makes up for the lack of natural terrain. Soundview Park offers a little bit of everything including access to the Hudson Riverside. There is a 1.5-mile greenway path that runs from O’Brian to Lafayette as well as dogs runs for small and large breeds. You will also find that, aside from the riverside greenway, there are multiple walking paths through the rest of the park. Just keep in mind that the sports areas are off limited to dogs. There is ample grass and trees to enjoy as well if you simply want to wander and give your dog access to a bit of natural scenery.

While there are other small green spaces in Soundview, these are playgrounds and most playgrounds do not allow dogs. You are better off sticking to Soundview Park where dogs are welcome.
