The popular neighborhood of Mill Basin is located in the south of Brooklyn, New York. Neighboring the Jamaica Bay waterway, this beautiful area has a coastal border offering great views out onto the calm waters. Bergen Beach is located just east of the area with East 67th Street as its border. To the north, you’ll find the area of Flatlands and, if you head west from Mill Basin, you’ll come across Marine Park and Golf Course.
The largest pet store in the area is Petland Discounts, a chain store located on Avenue U. Mill Basin Veterinary Clinic can be found on Avenue N, ideally situated within walking distance of just about anywhere in the neighborhood. You'll find another supply store in the west of the area which is great for grabbing any of your regular supplies such as food, treats, toys, and more! Essentially, Mill Basin isn’t short of pet amenities and you should find everything you need here.
Most of the coastal areas of Brooklyn are incredibly low lying and Mill Basin is no different. The elevation reaches no higher than around 10ft, so the incline from the Bay to the highest point is very marginal. This makes for an enjoyable, relaxed walk wherever you are in the neighborhood.
Mill Basin is typical of an inner-city location in terms of its terrain as the area is solely artificial, consisting of asphalt streets, sidewalks, and residential housing. You’ll be hard pressed to find any truly natural terrain. For that, you’ll have to head to one of the greenways in the surrounding area, or even out to sea! Don’t worry, if you’re the kind of person that enjoys letting your dog off the leash to roam free in a natural environment, there are enough parks and nature reserves nearby to satisfy your cravings. You may just have to head a little further afield.
Within Mill Basin itself, you’re limited in term of large green space. However, nearby, there is plenty of grassy area for you and your doggie pal to escape to. Head just west of Mill Basin and you’ll find Marine Park, Brooklyn’s large greenway with hundreds of acres of natural terrain to visit. Here, you’ll find many different habitats including ponds, wetlands, grasslands, and more. This really is the perfect place to escape city life and breathe in the fresh air!
North Forty Nature Preserve is also nearby, offering some of the most beautiful hiking trails that New York City has. From here you can also access Floyd Bennet Field, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. This is a hub for outdoor activities, so it’s a great place to come and join the community for all kinds of sports and recreations. It’s also ideal for dog walkers so it will give your pooch some socialization too!
