The streets with old, established trees are best to walk on during sunny and hot summer days and can be quite refreshing during the fall season as well. Springtime is often cold, wet, and muddy, while winter poses the most challenging time of year to walk or drive in this area. Due to Buffalo's proximity to Lake Erie, lake-effect snow is common during winter months, along with high winds and bitterly cold temperatures.
Due to these busy areas, you should always keep your dog on a leash. There are other walkers, dogs, and small animals that you may encounter walking in this area and you will want to have your dog under control at all times. Beyond this, you should find that your daily outing is relatively easy-going due to the lack of challenging terrain.
Martin Luther King Park is located at Fillmore and Walden Avenue, just to the north of Broadway-Fillmore. This large park is a favorite with the community, featuring a splash pad and playgrounds. There are many green spaces in the park for walking a dog and plenty of trees to supply shade.
Hennepin Park is located a short distance over the eastern border of Broadway-Fillmore, on Bailey Avenue. As a smaller park, Hennepin nonetheless offers a playground, tennis courts, and seating areas and is directly within the neighborhood. Shade is minimal here and if you need it on a sunny day, take your dog toward the tennis courts where larger trees stand. Hennepin makes for a quiet, peaceful place to sit or walk your dog.
