The Broadway-Fillmore district of Buffalo, New York has a long, storied history as having been home to Buffalo's Eastern European and Polish population during the early to mid-20th century. This area fell into disrepair and poverty but has since seen a resurgence and revitalization in its neighborhoods. This area is very densely populated with older homes and duplexes that are situated closely together. Sidewalks are plentiful, however, not all of the sidewalks are in the best shape, so watch your step when you are walking your dog.

The streets with old, established trees are best to walk on during sunny and hot summer days and can be quite refreshing during the fall season as well. Springtime is often cold, wet, and muddy, while winter poses the most challenging time of year to walk or drive in this area. Due to Buffalo's proximity to Lake Erie, lake-effect snow is common during winter months, along with high winds and bitterly cold temperatures.

Broadway-Fillmore is an entirely flat and mostly residential series of blocks. The neighborhood streets are quiet and make for a peaceful walking experience. As you and your dog will be walking almost entirely on pavement or sidewalks, take care to protect the dog's paws from rough surfaces or heat exposure. Use caution when walking on the streets that border this area, including Broadway and Fillmore, as both have a high volume of traffic during morning and evening rush hours. Always cross at designated lights and crosswalks for safety.

Due to these busy areas, you should always keep your dog on a leash. There are other walkers, dogs, and small animals that you may encounter walking in this area and you will want to have your dog under control at all times. Beyond this, you should find that your daily outing is relatively easy-going due to the lack of challenging terrain.

Martin Luther King Park is located at Fillmore and Walden Avenue, just to the north of Broadway-Fillmore. This large park is a favorite with the community, featuring a splash pad and playgrounds. There are many green spaces in the park for walking a dog and plenty of trees to supply shade.

Hennepin Park is located a short distance over the eastern border of Broadway-Fillmore, on Bailey Avenue. As a smaller park, Hennepin nonetheless offers a playground, tennis courts, and seating areas and is directly within the neighborhood. Shade is minimal here and if you need it on a sunny day, take your dog toward the tennis courts where larger trees stand. Hennepin makes for a quiet, peaceful place to sit or walk your dog.
