Buffalo, New York, is a highly walkable city where finding a nearby location to walk your dog is easy to do. In North Buffalo, the city center, and South Buffalo, there are numerous green spaces and residential areas that are perfect spots to keep your dog engaged and entertained. Located in Erie County, Buffalo is a former industrial city that has reemerged in the last decade as a progressive, family-friendly, and economically viable place to live. Areas of the city have been purposefully established, re-established, or repurposed to provide a variety of walking venues and sightseeing within this City of Good Neighbors.

Located on the banks of Lake Erie, Buffalo is susceptible to a wide variety of weather throughout the four seasons. Spring is often cool and rainy, summer hot and humid, and fall colorful and comfortable. Winters can be harsh with lake-effect snowstorms, icy conditions, and high winds.

Buffalo provides a fairly balanced mixture of artificial and natural terrain. Residential city neighborhoods typically have sidewalks and crosswalks available for walkers. Some roadways are located in busier areas of the city and in those spots, dog walkers should use caution due to high traffic volume and double-sided street parking. The majority of Buffalo's terrain is relatively flat and the northern sections of the city have minor swells or gradually developing hills while the southern part of the city has much hillier sections due to terrain and multiple bridges and overpasses.

The west part of the city is located along Lake Erie and provides some beautiful waterfront areas to walk including Canalside, the Erie Basin Marina, and Buffalo Harbor State Park. These locations offer a gorgeous view of the water with plenty of trails and green spaces to walk your dog as well as ample opportunities to watch people and boats out on the lake.

Buffalo sports an incredible amount of green spaces within the city limits consisting of both large city parks and smaller neighborhood parks. With rare exception, most city neighborhoods are within a short walk or a five to ten-minute drive of a local park, making Buffalo a wonderful city in which to walk a dog.

There are a few parks that stand out over the others for walking a dog. The crown gem of Buffalo is Delaware Park, located toward the northern part of the city. This 350-acre park offers ample room to walk and run including interior and exterior paths. With lots of shade and history surrounding you, Delaware Park is an ideal place to visit. The Barkyard dog park at Lasalle Park on the west side is a fenced-in, off-leash location for your dog to run and play. With separate sections for large and small dogs, this park has seating, shade, water, and waste bags available for visitors.
