Downtown New York is the center of Commerce for Manhattan. This highly populated area sits at the very tip of Manhattan, bordered by the Hudson River on one side and the East River on the other. This densely populated area is scattered with parks to give you some relief from the city walking. Generally, buildings in this neighborhood are tall, five to six-story apartment buildings, generally ornate and made of brick. Sidewalks are wide but offer no divider between road and sidewalk, and there is scant tree cover. Sidewalks are thick with pedestrian traffic and roads are heavy with vehicles, although traffic is generally forced to go relatively slowly down these streets.

While your dog may find the walk around these crowded city streets to be stimulating, especially if she can find a few people to pay attention to her, you are likely to want to find an escape from the city streets before long.

The city streets of downtown New York are a challenging place to walk your dog, with the thick pedestrian and vehicle traffic. While this can be a good place to work on leash manners and socialize an already well-socialized dog, you are certain to want a chance to get away from all the people sometimes.

At the very tip of the peninsula, you can find Battery Park, a beautifully manicured park with gorgeous views out onto the water. There are lots of benches here for you to rest on with your dog, as well as extensive walking paths to explore the beautiful flowers and shrubbery. Plenty of tree cover will make you forget you are in downtown New York for a moment, while the wide paths give your dog plenty of room to walk on a loose leash. Another notable park to get some variety in your walking experience with your dog is the Rockefeller Park where you can enjoy wide open grassy fields.

At the tip of the peninsula, the beautiful Battery Park offers a gorgeous horticultural experience with all of the lovely shrubbery and trees. A little further up the Battery Park Expressway will lead you to Rockefeller Park where you can enjoy wide-open fields with your dog.

Occasional regional parks like Zuccotti Park and City Hall Park can give you some relief as you wander through the streets of downtown New York. Washington Square Park also provides a very nice area for you to explore with your dog, with its lovely walking trails to forested and cleared grassy areas. If you want some real adventure, you can cross the river on a ferry or find a bridge and head to the Liberty State Park. This extensive park offers you a rare opportunity to enjoy natural beauty with your dog right in the heart of New York City.
