Mott Haven is an attractive neighborhood in the southwestern area of the Bronx. It is bordered by the Harlem River on one side and the East River on the other. This neighborhood is home to an attractive and rather large regional park called Saint Mary's Park, which offers wandering trails through attractive grassy and forested areas.
The neighborhoods of Mott Haven tend to feature large apartment buildings of six or seven stories. Sidewalks are wide but do not have dividers between sidewalk and road for the most part. While some areas of Mott Haven offer mature tree cover and attractive buildings, most areas of this neighborhood are not great for letting your dog walk on the loose leash, or for bicycling, rollerblading, or skateboarding with your dog due to busy streets and the lack of dividers.
For this reason, the St. Mary's Park is an important place for you to be able to go and walk your dog in Mott Haven. The beautiful rolling hills studded with rocky outcroppings will give you a chance to let your dog wander on a loose leash or even play a game of frisbee or ball.
Mott Haven is very much a city neighborhood and walking down city streets generally feels a little bit cramped, with the tall buildings pressing in on either side against sidewalk that, though wide, does not offer a divider between sidewalk and street. Despite the attractive tall tree cover throughout most of the neighborhood, the busyness of the city neighborhood makes it a less than ideal place for rollerblading, bicycling, or skateboarding with your dog.
The gorgeous Saint Mary's Park offers you and your dog a chance to wander through beautiful forested grounds with wide grassy spaces to enjoy with your dog. A large grassy square in the center of the park is studded with natural rocks and provides a rolling terrain that you and your dog will both appreciate after the structured walking through city streets.
These paths also provide a good place to enjoy activities on wheels with your dog, and the rocky outcroppings will allow your dog to test herself on terrain that is normally not accessible to her.
The gorgeous St Mary's Park offers a place for you and your dog to enjoy a rare bit of natural beauty after the crowded city streets of Mott Haven. These rolling hills studded with intermittent large rocky outcroppings will remind you of historic natural landscapes, while the lovely winding paths that go through the forest and fields of St Mary's Park provide plenty of places to explore with your dog.
While this park is not large enough to support much wildlife, you have a great chance of seeing birds, especially migratory birds seeking the shelter of the rare clusters of tall trees and reduced number of people. The wild smells from the creatures that have wandered through the park in the night, like raccoons and possums, will occupy your dog for hours. Areas of rocky outcropping are a great place to observe harmless snakes and lizards sunning themselves, especially just at sunset.
