Riverdale is a neighborhood that borders the Hudson River and is situated in the northwest area of the Bronx. It is near the Van Cortlandt Park and includes the Wave Hill Public Gardens. This small neighborhood is heavily forested and provides a lovely environment in which to walk your dog. Neighborhood streets are so forested in some areas that you can barely see the single family homes through the trees. While many neighborhood streets do not have sidewalks, you do not miss them as the grassy yards run up to the street and traffic is slow and infrequent.

A small portion of Riverdale is made up of tall and well-spaced apartment buildings with sidewalks. This area is not unpleasant to walk through, but is not nearly so nice as the area that is composed of single family homes or the many parks available to you. The coastline is forested, but a railroad divides the forest from the water, so the area can be a bit difficult to navigate.

Walking through Riverdale is very pleasant, with the extensive forest and widely spaced single family homes making you feel like you are walking through a lovely park instead of a neighborhood. You can walk your dog on a loose leash, or enjoy bicycling, skateboarding, or rollerblading down neighborhood streets that have rare and slow traffic.

For more extensive wilderness exploration, you can head towards the coast and the Raoul Wallenberg Forest which covers the entire shoreline. While you are divided from the shoreline by a railroad track, if you are careful, you can consider crossing the railroad track and walking along the shoreline with your dog. If you stick to the forest, you will enjoy an interesting walk through the thick and mature landscape with plenty of trees to weave in and out of. The Wave Hill Public Gardens also provide lovely places for you to walk your dog, including large grassy areas for you to play fetch or frisbee.

Riverdale is more greenway than neighborhood, with widely spaced homes and lots of greenery and trees around most of the area. The Wave Hill Public Gardens provide a pleasant place for you to relax in a natural setting with your dog, while the forested coastline provides you with opportunity to explore mature forest and see all sorts of wildlife along the edge of the bay. Large, grassy areas along with woodland provide a varied habitat that will support a great variety of birds as well as mammals and insect life that can be interesting to investigate.

On the other side of Riverdale, Van Cortlandt Park provides miles and miles of forested trail for you to explore with your dog, as well as grassy areas in which to relax. You can feel as if you are getting lost in the wilderness, but won't actually get lost due to the well-maintained and marked trails, making for a great walking experience all around.
