Rosedale is a neighborhood in the Southeast area of Queens, between Springfield Gardens and Valley Stream state park. It encompasses Idlewild Park and North Woodmere Park and is situated near the JFK International Airport. Homes in Rosedale tend to be square two-story single family homes or duplexes as well as a scattering of low apartment buildings.

Sidewalks tend to be lined with tall attractive trees, and sidewalks have a grassy divider between road and sidewalk. Some yards are fenced, but most are open and grassy, making this an open-feeling neighborhood to walk your dog for the most part. Long, straight blocks make this a relatively good neighborhood for bicycling, rollerblading or skateboarding with your dog, but intermittent fenced yards mean that you should only use wheels in this area if you'll feel confident of controlling your dog.

The gorgeous Brookville Park, with its long walking trails, scattered ponds, and beautiful tree cover is a lovely walk in and of itself, and for more exploration, you can follow it into the magnificent Hook Creek wildlife sanctuary.

Walking through the neighborhoods of Rosedale is very pleasant, with generally set back homes and grassy front yards that are usually not fenced. The tall tree cover and grassy yards make for a lovely walk, but you will no doubt be drawn towards the beautiful parks at the perimeter of this neighborhood.

Brookville Park offers lovely walking trails through intermittently forested and grassy areas around a lovely stream connecting several ponds. This wide grassy space is the perfect place to run around with your dog, or throw a frisbee or ball. Your dog will enjoy exploring the pondside, as well as walking along the little stream.

If you and your dog are real explorers, you can follow the creek into the swamplands of Idlewild Park and the Greater Hooks Creek wildlife sanctuary. While much of this area is water or too boggy to walk, if you have a canoe or kayak you can explore some areas of this park. There are also some places to walk in this area, like along Brookville Boulevard, but be careful if you are going to walk near the highway, as it does not have any sidewalks.

Rosedale is lucky enough to have access to several beautiful natural areas. Once you enter Hook Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, the exploration opportunities are endless, with the extensive waterway and beautiful grassy and marshy areas. While you must be careful to only enter areas that are acceptable for you to enter with your dog and be careful not to disturb wildlife, kayaking or canoeing with your dog around this area can be a lot of fun for both of you and a wonderful bonding experience. You also have a very good chance of seeing some fascinating wildlife and even getting to observe their natural behavior in this incredible natural environment.

If you would rather not go so far into exploration as the greater area of the wildlife sanctuary, Idlewild Park provides several lovely walking trails so that you can explore the marshy area without getting your feet wet. Even the more regional Brookville Park offers a  delightful area for you to walk around with your dog, with its walking trails through grassy terrain and lots of tree cover. You'll be surprised by the wildlife you see around the ponds and the birds you see in the trees in this attractive park.
