The Upper West Side is located in the Uptown Manhattan region along the west side of Central Park. This affluent neighborhood is a residential space with universities and performing arts schools. Restaurants, stores, and other necessary services along with theatres, museums, and unique retail shops line the main thoroughfares in the area that residents can reach on foot. The community, like much of Manhattan, is highly walkable with lots of business available within a short distance. The Lincoln Centre is located on the Upper West Side and hosts performances by New York City Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera that residents can walk to, weather permitting.
Because of Manhattan’s coastal location, precipitation is a common occurrence. Winter can also bring cold temperatures, and although snow is rare, it does happen occasionally. Be prepared with warm outerwear and rain gear available for chilly and rainy days so your canine companion doesn't miss out on his daily constitutional.
Although businesses, restaurants, and shops line many busy thoroughfares at street level in multi-story buildings in the Upper West Side, the area is considered to be a residential neighborhood. Many side streets are quieter than surrounding Manhattan neighborhoods and may even feature shady trees and landscaping on properties in this upscale community. Most buildings date back to the pre-war era and feature architecture from this period with brownstones, art deco, and beaux-arts style buildings and facades. The Lincoln Centre, large churches, universities, and the American Museum of Natural History buildings are also located here.
The Upper West Side is situated between Riverside Park and the Hudson River on the west and Central Park on the east which provides spacious green areas bordering the community. The landscape is flat in this district and there are no steep climbs to worry about when enjoying the neighborhood on foot with your furry friend.
On the west side, Riverside Park stretches for 4 miles along the Hudson River. There are greenways along the shore where pedestrians with their pooches can take in the activities along piers and the waterfront. There's even an enclosed dog run where your dog can safely play off-leash with no danger of taking off on a solo adventure. Other enclosed dog runs on the westside include the West 87 Street Dog Run and the West 72 Street Dog Run.
