Woodhaven is a leafy neighborhood in the borough of Queens. In Woodhaven, you’re never far from nature as the area has the most trees of any neighborhood in the borough. Located centrally in Queens, it is bordered by Park Lane South and Forest Park on its northern border. Atlantic Avenue makes up its southern side with Ozone Park residing next door. To the east, you have Richmond Hill while, if you head westwards, you’ll find Cypress Hill.
It’s easy to find all the services you need for your pooch in Woodhaven. On Jamaica Avenue, you’ll find St. Mina Animal Clinic. If your pup is feeling under the weather, this is the place you’ll need to head to. Dog n' Cat House is a pet groomer that can be found in the south of the neighborhood on 101st Street. In the Pathmark Shopping Center, you’ll find a discount supply store ideal for grabbing any bits and bobs you need.
Woodhaven itself is very level and there are no major hills to be concerned about. Even the smallest pooch will find it easy to traverse this terrain. As you head north towards Forest Park, you may encounter some slight gradients. Forest Park is much higher than the surrounding areas. Therefore, if you’re looking to make your way to this major greenway, it’s important to keep this in mind.
While Woodhaven is the leafiest neighborhood in the borough, there’s no doubt that it’s still very much a city-center location. The terrain is almost totally artificial, comprised primarily of blocks of houses, streets, and sidewalks. Those looking for a more natural feel will head to the surrounding greenways as it’s likely that your doggie pal will want to feel grass under their feet at some point too. The weather in New York is incredibly varied, so make sure you bring water with you if you’re heading out.
Woodhaven is surrounding by interesting parks and open spaces to explore. Your pooch will feel like they're experiencing a new adventure every day if you are willing to search just outside the neighborhood’s boundaries. The major greenway that can easily be accessed is Forest Park. This beautiful, green land features a dog run as well as a couple of ponds and lengthy hiking trails. There is a golf course on the land too, however, this is unlikely to be dog-friendly, so please be aware of which paths you're taking.
If you walk westwards towards Cypress Hill, you’ll come across Hyland Park. Again, this green space also has a stunning pond which is great for strolling around when the weather is nice. There are a few cemeteries in this area which are beautiful to walk around, however, it’s important to be respectful of mourners in these areas. Please keep your dogs on a leash.
