Greece Canal Dog Park on Elmgrove Road is a completely fenced-in one-acre park for dogs of all breeds and sizes. There are two separate areas – one for small breeds and puppies; the other is for large breeds. Dogs must be registered, and the owner must have proof of register within the County of Monroe Department of Parks in order to enter this park. Be sure to do this, or have this on-hand, as failure to register will result in a hefty and unneeded fine. The cost to register your dog is $24 per year, per dog ($25 if you’re paying with a credit or debit card). Greece Canal Dog Park is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., October 15 to March 14, and seven a.m. to 9 p.m. March 15 to October 14.
Since you now have your dog registered with the Monroe County Department of Parks, you might as well check out Ellison Dog Park too. Ellison Dog Park is located within the beautiful 447-acre Ellison Park and is one of the two legal off-leash dog parks in Rochester. Ellison Dog Park is for registered dogs only, but the registration fee of $24 per dog, per year, only adds up to six cents a day. Registrations expire December 31 each year.
If you want to enjoy a hike with your dog, consider exploring the Pittsford Trail System, one of the 1,600 rail-trails supported by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. Pack a picnic lunch, lots of water, and perhaps a dog treat or two, and take in Rochester’s breathtaking beauty.
If your furry friend is ready for fresh air and exercise, take a trip to Genesee Valley Park. This 800 acre park is a massive expanse of fun. With amenities like athletic fields, playgrounds, and biking trails, it’s no wonder people flock to this park to enjoy the great outdoors. Take your pooch for a walk on one of the many trails, or just mosey through the grassy area. If you have a New York fishing license, let your pup hang out on the bank of the Genessee River as you cast a line. To venture outside of the park, follow the Genessee Greenway. This trail goes all the way into downtown Rochester, so go as long as your pup’s paws will allow.
Highland Park in Ellwanger-Barry is a pawsome spot to spend some quality time with your furry companion. This park is known for its beautiful flower gardens and hosts many events throughout the year. Your leashed pup will love walking through the large expanse of lilacs, rhododendrons and azaleas. Her nose will go wild sniffing all the sweet floral scents. Highland Park also has a trail that wanders through a collection of memorials as well as reservoir and a little pond. Most notably, the park is home to the Warner Castle and Sunken Garden. Needless to say, your dog is sure to have a tail waggin’ time!
Pack up your pooch and head over to Turning Point Park. Nestled in the Charlotte area, this beautiful park encompasses the Genesee River as it makes its final descent into Lake Ontario. There are plenty of trails to follow within the 275 wooded acres. Turning Point Park Trail clocks in at 5.4 miles and is one of the more popular trails. Let your four legged friend get some exercise as you head on out this trail and enjoy the riverfront scenery. This park is also full of wildlife and birds. Chances are your pup’s ears will perk up at the sound of something scampering through the woods. With this in mind, keep your dog leashed in this area.
Looking for a new place to take your four legged companion? Cobb’s Hill Park is one of Rochester’s hidden gems. With over 100 acres of natural beauty, this park won’t disappoint. Take your pup on one of the wooded trails or stroll around the reservoir. He’ll love the feeling of sunshine on his back and dirt under his paws. This park is a favorite for the local softball leagues, so during the summer months your pooch will get plenty of socialization. Be sure to saunter over to Lake Riley. The surrounding grassy area is a pawsome spot to stop for a picnic. Don’t forget to pack your furry friend a bone!
