Woodrow is a neighborhood found in south-central Staten Island. While it is a residential neighborhood in one of the busiest cities in the world, Woodrow has a more relaxed and sleepy feel to it, making it a hub for families. Woodrow Road runs centrally through the neighborhood, making it one of the major thoroughfares in the area. To the north, you have Rossville, the boundaries of which are often blurred with Woodrow and highly debated. Just south, you’ll find Annadale, another residential neighborhood. To the east, you have Great Kills and Freshkills Park, while on its western border you’ll find Charleston and the Arthur Kills waterway.

There is a range of pet amenities in Woodrow and in the surrounding areas. Pleasant Plains Animal Hospital can be found on Amboy Road. Samatha’s Special Dog Trainer is also nearby, located on Hawley Avenue. In fact, Woodrow has almost anything you need so don’t worry about providing your pooch with all their little luxuries.

The terrain in Woodrow is, of course, primarily artificial. This is to be expected of a city center location and must be taken into account when deciding which route to take your puppy friend. This is ideal for you as the dog walker, however, meaning that any attire is suitable. If you’re searching for something more rough-and-ready, Woodrow may not be the ideal neighborhood.

The area is also incredibly flat. This is the reason that Staten Island was so badly affected by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and it remains at risk if sea levels continue to rise. Until then, however, it makes walking your pooch incredibly easy. There are no large hills to contend with, so you’ll find yourself breaking into a jog in order to get that heart rate pumping and keep your canine friend on their toes. Alternatively, keep a slow pace for a relaxed morning stroll or a tired after-work wander.

Woodrow has a surprisingly leafy feel to it with lots of trees and green open spaces, not all of which are open to the public. Bloomingdale Park can be found to the west of the area, providing a touch of nature for the entire community. It features the ever-important dog run that your pooch is after, however, it can get busy, so make sure they are trained to be friendly with other dogs. This large greenway also features a fitness path, sports grounds, and a playground for the kids.

Further westwards, you can find an even bigger area for your pup to run free. Clay Pit Ponds Nature Reserve features 265 acres of wide open space for proper off-the-leash sprints. There are numerous hiking trails as well as a variety of terrains including wetlands and ponds. You’ll even find a wildlife study area if you fancy getting seriously into nature.
