Situated just west of the Ohio State University and across the Olentangy Freeway is a Columbus neighborhood known as West Campus. Most of the area is not ideal for dog walking, but the sprawling Fred Beekman Park is the perfect place to take Fido for a stroll. A nearby Pet Supplies Plus offers a variety of supplies in a pinch. Nearby, the Upper Arlington Animal Hospital and Ohio State University Veterinary Hospital offer emergency services just in case.

Columbus' climate changes with the seasons, so it's very important to check the forecast before you head out for a walk. While the summer months bring warm, sometimes very humid, temperatures, accompanying thunderstorms can get severe. Try to plan a walk in the morning before the sidewalks heat up and the humidity rises. In the winter, check the weather to best avoid being caught in a snow storm or icy conditions.

Besides the park, West Campus doesn't have a lot to offer in terms of walkable streets and unique places to discover. It's best to stick around the southern part of the neighborhood by the greenways of Fred Beekman Park, especially because most West Campus roadways don't have sidewalks. If you're walking along Carmack Road or Kenny Road, watch out for fast-moving cars traveling down multiple traffic lanes. Always cross in the crosswalk and keep your pet on a tight leash to avoid problems.

The northern part of West Campus is mainly comprised of an agriculture and natural resources laboratory, where pups are not allowed. The park is large enough that you shouldn't feel tempted to venture north of the park, but if you're up for an adventure, consider heading west to the university where there is sprawling green space and a few more places to discover.

If you're walking Fido in West Campus, you're most likely spending your time at Fred Beekman Park, an expansive, 43-acre greenway with plenty to do outdoors with your four-legged friend. The park features several athletic fields as well as three ponds surrounded by walking trails. Connected to it is Jesse Owens West Park, a several-acre park owned by Ohio State that features several athletic fields where you can catch a game.

If you want to venture out of West Campus, consider exploring the Ohio State campus where there is plenty of grassy areas and places to relax. You might even run into some college students who would love to give your pup plenty of attention! Just remember to keep your pooch on a leash to keep them from interrupting studying students. You'll also likely come up to several parks on campus, including a large arboretum with 17 gardens and a labyrinth.
