Montavilla is a large residential and commercial neighborhood on the eastside of Portland, Oregon. There are many unique restaurants, a theatre, bakeries, ice cream parlors, specialty shops and services located along Stark Street and other side roads. The neighborhood is highly walkable and locals frequently travel the area on foot for a bite to eat, to gather necessities, or for entertainment. Pet owners will find a unique pet shop, Personal Beast, on the northwest corner of the district.

Montavilla pedestrians and pets enjoy temperate weather most of the year. Winters can have some cooler temperatures, especially at night, and occasional snow, but this weather is short lived and not frequent. Be careful when cold snaps do occur as sidewalk surfaces can become icy and slippery. Your dog may even appreciate a waterproof coat to keep fur dry. Summers are warm and dry with few extremely hot temperatures and ideal for traveling on foot.

Interstate 205 is located on the east side of the neighborhood and Interstate 84 is on the north. Foot travel in these directions is hampered by the freeways and high-speed traffic. The south side is bordered by Division Street and the west by the Mt. Tabor neighborhood. There are some gentle inclines, but no steep hills for pedestrians and pets to climb and neighborhood streets are lined with sidewalks providing safe walking paths for you and your pet.

Homes in the area are mostly single-family, vintage houses with well-landscaped yards, beautiful gardens, large trees, and plenty of bushes and shrubs creating a very green picturesque community. Mt. Tabor is visible on the west side and several parks in the area provide additional natural landscaping.

There are several main thoroughfares in and on the edges of Montavilla and commercial activity where traffic is increased.  Make sure you keep your dog close to you while walking these areas.

There are three good-sized urban community parks in Montavilla. Montavilla Park Is 9-acres and amenities include picnic areas, restrooms, a playground, soccer and softball fields, and lots of great paved and unpaved walking paths to trot around with your pup.

Berrydale Park is slightly smaller at 6 acres and has a soccer and softball field, playground, picnic tables, and open areas to enjoy. Harrison Park is the smallest park, but still a good size with 4 acres, paved paths, and recreational facilities.

A short distance to the west is Mt Tabor Park. Mt. Tabor is a volcanic cylinder cone and trails to the summit offer views of the Portland skyline. There is a playground, outdoor stage, sports facilities, and reservoirs in the park. Best of all, there is an off-leash area for your pup to play. The area does not have a fence and dogs using the park must have good recall to enjoy this space.
