Until about one hundred years ago, Eastwick wasn't anything more than a sparse meadowland. But today, this southwest Philadelphia neighborhood is a sprawling, bustling area thanks to the construction of an international airport. It's comprised mostly of residential buildings, but you will find a few businesses scattered around the area. Though there aren't any pet stores around, the Philadelphia Animal Hospital is located in the middle of Eastwick in case of emergency.

Eastwick offers a mix of city blocks and natural scenery because of the bordering wildlife refuge. You can find a little bit of both during your walk in the neighborhood. This also comes in handy when hot and humid days make the sidewalk too hot for your pup's paws because you can, instead, spend your time in one of Eastwick's parks. Still, check the forecast before heading out. Avoid snowy and icy days in the winter by going out during a sunny afternoon.

The neighborhood features a few parks as well as a nature preserve, providing you with plenty of options to enjoy nature. There are also many grassy spots in the residential area perfect for a rest stop. Eastwick can be fairly flat depending on where you are in the neighborhood, but there are a few small hills throughout the area. Always bring water for you and your pup, especially on hot, sunny days.

As the airport is just below Eastwick, there are several very busy roads in the neighborhood. Island Avenue, Bartram Avenue, and Lindbergh Boulevard, to name a few, feature multiple lanes of traffic and, in some parts, narrow sidewalks. While these roads are easily avoidable during a walk in Eastwick, you might need to cross them. If you find yourself there, keep your pet on a tight leash and use extreme caution when crossing the road.

While there aren't any dog parks nearby, the neighborhood has several public parks where pets are welcome on a leash. Suffolk and Eastwick Parks are expansive greenways with walking paths away from the roads near shady trees. You'll find places to sit and rest for a moment as well. Across from Suffolk Park is a small neighborhood of duplex homes that feature walking areas with grassy lawns.

Eastwick was built upon marshy meadow lands and, as a result, there is still a lot of undeveloped land there. A lot of this land is found at the John Heinz National Wildlife Reserve at Tinicum. The reserve offers an escape from the busy city and into a land of natural splendor. While pets are not allowed in the water, they are still welcome on a six-foot leash to enjoy the miles and miles of trails open for exploration.
