Located in southwest Philadelphia between the Schuylkill River and Cobbs Creek, Elmwood is a bustling neighborhood with plenty to see and do. The area features trails, parks, a variety of restaurants, and a street trolley to take you wherever you need to go. Many of Elmwood's eateries and shops sit along Woodland Avenue where you'll find pizza shops, clothing stores, bakeries, and more.

Elmwood can be an interesting area to explore with your pet, but make sure you check the weather before going out for a walk. You'll mostly be walking on sidewalks in Elmwood, so try to plan morning walks in the summer before the temperature rises. Hot sidewalks are not suitable for puppy paws and can cause damage in the worst conditions. In the winter, plan out an afternoon walk during a sunny day so that you can avoid ice and snow as much as you can.

You can expect a relaxing, leisurely walk when you're in Elmwood. The streets are flat and not as crowded as other parts of Philadelphia. It takes about 50 minutes to walk from one end of the community to the other without turning down different blocks, so you can make your walk as long or as short as you please. There are so many blocks of homes and businesses to discover along your way. There are also some areas, such as Lindbergh Boulevard and Cobbs Creek Parkway, that feature scenic foliage and grassy spaces along the street.

There are several busy roads in Elmwood, especially because of the street trolley. The trolley travels along a section of South 65th Street, Woodland Avenue, and Elmwood Avenue. Stay aware when walking down narrow sidewalks or crossing busy streets, especially if your pet is easily distracted by fast-moving vehicles.

While there aren't a lot of tree-lined streets and patches of grass to stop and rest, there are several parks around Elmwood that are perfect for enjoying a sunny day. Connell Park, located in the middle of Elmwood on Elmwood Avenue, offers a friendly spot to relax under the shade. To the south is Buist Park, a small grassy square with a walking path. Elmwood Park is one of the neighborhood's largest parks and it features paths surrounded by tall trees that are beautiful to admire in the fall. If you have children along for the walk, there are several playgrounds, and even a skate park, throughout Elmwood.

If you're looking for a longer hike with more scenery, take your walk to the Cobbs Creek Trail! The creek acts as Elmwood's western border and the trail, which follows an old railroad bed and begins in Elmwood, spans about 3.7 miles.
