Back in the 1950s, Fitler Square was, like many areas of Philly, suffering from a serious case or urban blight. But after successfully petitioning then-Mayor Clark for help, the neighborhood has undergone significant revitalization as new single-family homes, apartments, and condos were built. The community sits on the banks of the Schuylkill River to the west and right next door to Rittenhouse Square on the east side. There are parks to play in and the Schuylkill River Trail that runs for miles along the river bank. There are dog parks and pet stores in the neighborhood as well as restaurants in the local area for you to try out.

If you like winter's chill, Philly is perfect with weeks of below freezing temperatures and plenty of snow and ice. To make winters even better - or worse - there is always the risk of a nor'easter blowing in, bringing with it incredible wind chills and tons of snow.

The terrain here is like much of the rest of Philly: one flat street after another. There's not much to get excited about when it comes to taking your pup out for daily walks. The good news is that you can do far more than just walking them around the same block day after day. You need to put your thinking cap on if you want to give your pup walks they can look forward to! Try going in different directions when you leave your home. With a little practice, you won't even have to worry about getting lost.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that the pavement can be pretty hard on your pup's paw pads. Start out with short walks at first as these will give their paws time to become used to walking on the pavement and build up the calluses necessary to protect them when you start adding more distance to your walks.

The green spaces in Fitler Square include Fitler Square Park in the center of the community, providing a full city block of shade trees, paved paths, and shade trees for you to enjoy. But if it's more space you crave, all you have to do is head over to the river. Here, you will find the Schuylkill River Park with plenty of space for you and the family to have a picnic or play in the grass. But, more importantly, there are two dog parks here.

The Big Dog Run and the Little Dog Run are both fenced-in areas where you can let your pup run around without a leash. This gives them a chance to socialize with the other dogs, make new friends, and catch up with old ones. The park also serves as access to the Schuylkill River Trail. You can get in plenty of exercise hiking up and down the river on a warm sunny summer day.
