Haddington started its history in the 1800s as a neighborhood of working-class families filling the textile and masonry mills in the area. The area has always been a working-class neighborhood but has more than its share of struggles. Today, great efforts to help this area thrive again have been met with success and, while the area still has a ways to go, you can walk through most of it reasonably safely provided you abide by safe walking rules.

The area has a lot of different retail stores and eateries, so there are plenty of amenities. The closest pet store is just outside of the neighborhood, so you will not find it too difficult to take care of your dog's needs.

The weather in Philadelphia allows for walking from spring through fall, with the exception of hot days where the pavement might be too uncomfortable for your pup’s tender paws.

The vast majority of Haddington is flat with some small elevation changes to the west part of the neighborhood near Haddington Woods. These elevation changes are so minor that even the newest walkers will not find them to be a problem. The flat streets of Haddington can seem to make walking a bit boring, but there are plenty of ways to mix up your walks to ensure that they are both challenging and enjoyable for you and your pup.

If getting a workout is your goal, then consider increasing your pace or using interval training where you sprint for short distances and vary your walking speed. Change up directions and become explorers, finding new things you never knew were in your neighborhood.

Expect mostly artificial terrain as you romp through the neighborhood as there is not much in the way of greenery. If you manage to find a patch of grass, you are luckier than most in Haddington!

There really are not any greenways or parks in Haddington itself, but there are a few places to go just outside the neighborhood. Haddington Woods borders the neighborhood on the west side and, while a golf course does take up a large part of this area, there is a trail at the southeast corner of the woods and a few areas where walking or just playing in the grass is possible.

To the north of the woods and the golf course is Morris Park which is 147 acres with lots of trails to walk, two creeks, and plenty of grass and trees.

The only other park in the vicinity is Carroll Park just to the north of the east side of Haddington which makes it convenient to residents on that side of the neighborhood. There are walking paths as well as plenty of green grass. This park is a nice alternative on hot days when sidewalks are a little too warm.
