Lower Moyamensing is an older neighborhood in South Philly, made up almost entirely of row houses. Unlike many older neighborhoods that have been allowed to fall into disrepair, the residents here have worked hard to keep their community neat and tidy. The one thing missing here is grass, although there are trees planted along the sidewalks. Many of the homes here have been completely modernized and are helping to turn this into a very trendy neighborhood. Crime here is a little high, but providing you take the proper precautions, you and your dog should be safe walking together.

The climate here runs from below freezing in the winter to warm and sunny in the summer. There are several dog parks, pet stores, and pet groomers within driving distance. For the foodie in you, there are multiple restaurants covering a wide range of ethnic cuisine from around the world that are worth sampling their menus.

The easiest way to describe the terrain in Lower Moyamensing is to say that it looks as though someone poured a giant concrete slab and then built a community on top of it. In fact, beyond the trees planted along the streets, there isn't a blade of grass to be seen unless it happens to be the weeds growing around the trees and phone poles. Perhaps when Desmond Morris, a noted British zoologist, wrote the phrase, "the city is not a concrete jungle, it is a human zoo," he was describing Moyamensing!

The best thing you can do when faced with this type of terrain is to find new and creative ways to make your walks more exciting. You can try walking around different blocks or take a walk down to Marconi Plaza where there are 19 acres of green space split in half by a broad boulevard for you and your dog to play on.

One of the biggest issues with living in Lower Moyamensing is that there aren't any green spaces within the community for you or your dog to make use of. It is a pavement-only community, meaning that you must be prepared to go outside of the community.

The closest place with grass is Marconi Park. The park originally had two ponds, but these have long since been filled in. Today, the park offers 19 acres of grass of which 25 percent is covered in shade trees and there are plenty of trails to walk along.

Further to the south is the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park that covers 348 acres, including a 146-acre golf course and 125 acres of greenways, trails, picnic areas, ponds, and a lake. This is a great place to take your pooch when you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle that is Lower Moyamensing.
