The Philadelphia Navy Yard was once one of the largest and busiest Naval repair facilities in the country spanning over 200 years. When the Navy scaled back operations here in the 1990s, a number of industries moved in. While there isn't much in the way of permanent residences here, there are hotels. If you are staying at one of the hotels here, you will have to drive up into the city to find restaurants and pet supply stores. However, you are just across the Interstate from the nearest park where there is room to play.

Living in Philly means learning to enjoy all four seasons. Spring and fall here are perfect for going out for long walks along the river. Summers are amazing with temperatures hovering in the 80s and blue skies that seem to go on forever. It's the winter you have to worry about! There is plenty of snow and temperatures that hover far below the freezing mark.

The terrain here is 95 percent paved. Keep in mind that not too long ago, the area was a fully functional naval repair facility. The ground has been leveled and paved to make it easier to move heavy parts and loads around. The few spots of green are restricted within the shipyard, but there is a large area of green in the areas that have been demolished and abandoned.

You can, of course, use the sidewalks running through much of the "Yard" to get your exercise in, but make sure to check your pup's paws frequently to make sure they are not being torn up by the pavement. If they are not used to walking on paved surfaces, it takes a while for the pads on the bottom of their paws to toughen up enough for you to take them on extended walks. Otherwise, you should stick to walking on the grass.

For over 200 years, the Naval Shipyard has been in the business of repairing, refurbishing, and rebuilding ships, both for the Navy and commercial shipping industries. The majority of the entire area is paved, but there are a few small areas of grass built in for you and your pup to walk on. The Riverfront Walkway runs along a large section of the shipyard. It is a great place to walk, drop a line in the water, or watch the action out on the river.

However, if you want room for the two of you to run around on, it's just a hop, skip, and jump across I-95 to the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park. The FDR Park covers over 340 acres, has three ponds, and plenty of trails for you to explore. There are picnic tables for the whole family to enjoy and if you bring your own fishing gear, you never know what you might catch in the lakes.
