Saunders Park is a neighborhood of row houses and small businesses named for the park at the corner of Powelton Ave. and Saunders Ave. The park sits next to the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. In the neighborhood, most of those who live here live in row houses, but there are also a number of older apartment buildings. There are a couple of bars and corner stores in the community, but for most of your shopping, great places to eat, and pet supply stores, you have no choice but to look further afield.

The bulk of the area is fully paved, but the most important feature is the namesake park. Saunders Park or Saunder' Park Greene is a small space that is very popular with the locals. The weather here runs from below freezing to sweltering in the late summer months. Philly enjoys the full range of four seasons which make walking around a lot of fun.

The terrain here is mostly concrete sidewalks and paved roads. If you and your pup are not used to living in the city, paved surfaces can present a bit of a challenge. The pads under a dog's paws were designed for being out in the wild. They are best-suited to wide open meadows and forests and were not made for walking on concrete. The skin on their paws is quite sensitive and will take some time to toughen up.

At first, you should keep your walks short; maybe to the end of the block or the length of the entire block. You need to give your pup's paws enough time to grow a layer of callus thick enough not to be damaged on longer walks. The layer of callus will also protect them from the freezing cold pavement in the winter months and sidewalks that are hot enough to fry an egg on in the summer.

There is only one greenway in Saunders Park, which is, of course, Saunders Park Greene. The park occupies most of an entire block and is a popular location for various events such as the annual Lancaster Jazz and Arts Festival. Here, you will find trails running through the park, plenty of shade trees for the two of you to get out of the sun, and plenty of wide open grassy space for you and your pup to run around on having some fun and, at the same time, getting in plenty of exercise.

You are also only a short drive from the Philadelphia Zoo, Fairmount Park, and acres of grass with trails for you and your pooch to wander around on. Fairmount Park offers plenty of trails and rolling terrain that make a nice change from wandering around on paved surfaces and give them a break from the wear and tear on their paws.
