Upper Roxborough is a neighborhood tucked in the upper corner of Northwest Philadelphia. It is removed from most of the central urban areas in town and has more of a suburban, small-town feel even though it still falls within Philadelphia’s city limits. Its landscape is marked by wide roads with a few small businesses and chain stores, grassy areas and trees lining all the streets, and moderate-to-large-sized homes scattered throughout its many residential sections. In this area, you're likely to find a few amenities to keep you nearby without having to wander too far.

Philly weather is fairly moderate, considering its proximity to the Atlantic which can provide a buffer for temperature extremes. The winter weather may, at times, bring snow, ice, and sleet, but very rarely will it drop so low that you won't be able to leave your home. Summers are pleasantly warm but rarely drift above the 90s.

Most of the terrain in the Philadelphia area is flat and mild, but in its northern corridors, the city begins to see some more hills and inclines. This is the case in Upper Roxborough where the terrain is still fairly mild but there are noticeable slopes that appear on streets such as Henry Avenue, a major road that cuts from south to north in the center of the neighborhood. The environment still has some artificial, urban aspects, but there is still a good amount of natural space and it is less densely populated.

Upper Roxborough is a fairly low-traffic area in Philadelphia, so you won’t have many issues dealing with foot and street traffic on the main roads or in the residential sections which make up most of the neighborhood. Almost anywhere in the boundaries of the neighborhood will make for a fine place to walk with your dog.

There are loads of parks and greenways in and around Upper Roxborough. Just southeast of the neighborhood, you will find Wissahickon Valley Park which is a massive park that is the most ideal candidate for dog walking in the area. The park stretches for over 2000 acres throughout the northwest section of Philadelphia with forests, nature trails, and open green areas all surrounding Wissahickon Creek which runs for miles. No matter what kind of dog you have, you will be able to find something in Wissahickon Park for you to enjoy.

There are several other small parks, playgrounds, and greenways on the western side of Upper Roxborough. Near Cathedral Road, you will find two unofficially marked open green areas that are often used for dog walking or recreational sports. These will provide smaller, slightly more accessible options than Wissahickon, but both serve different walking purposes and are within easy walking distance of anywhere in Upper Roxborough.
