West Kensington is located in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The mostly residential community has a main commercial corridor located along West Lehigh Avenue on its northern border and a few commercial businesses on main streets throughout the community providing services like convenience stores. There are schools and a hospital within walking distance for area residents.

The weather in Philadelphia is variable with warm sunny days, overcast periods, and rainy days frequently occurring throughout most months, regardless of the season. Winters are colder and snow sometimes occurs but temperatures do not stay below freezing for long and snow cover does not survive frequent warm temperatures and thawing. A warm coat and good footwear to counteract inclement winter weather is a must if you walk your dog frequently in Philadelphia, as is good rain gear and an umbrella for frequent rainy days. Summers can be hot and humid and walking your pet during the hottest parts of the day should be avoided.

West Kensington is located between Kensington Avenue to the southeast, Front Street on the west, and Allegheny Avenue on the north. The area has some hills that require climbing on hikes through the neighborhood and should be avoided on hot summer days or winter days when traction is poor from recent snow falls. There are many older and historic buildings in the area and homes consist mostly of row and townhouses on narrow streets with sidewalks.

There is not very much landscaping in the neighborhood, although several area parks provide some green spaces. There are also some vacant and undeveloped properties throughout the region that can present hazards to pets as these unmaintained lots may contain building supplies, debris, or trash and litter. A rail line runs along the east border of the community and creates a barrier to on-foot travel in that direction as tracks can only be crossed at designated pedestrian crossing locations.

Fairhill Square is located on the north side of the community. This park has large shade trees, a playground, a central paved area with benches, and paved pedestrian paths crisscrossing the square. This locale makes a great place to stop and enjoy some shade on a hot day.

A little to the south, the Norris Square Park provides another green space with pedestrian paths radiating out from the central circular features like spokes. A playground is located in the center and there are seating areas in this heavily treed, picturesque park to keep park-goers cool and provide shelter on rainy days.

Triangle Dog Park and Monks Dog Run are located a short drive to the east and both provide enclosed dog runs with an area for your dog to play off-leash. Tacony Creek Park can be reached by vehicle to the north and contains more greenways and trails to hike with your energetic pup.
