Today, Allegheny West is a great combination of businesses and residential buildings. Residentially, this neighborhood is a combination of standalone, single-family homes, town houses, and some older buildings that have been converted into smaller apartment units. Commercially, Allegheny West has a lot to offer residents and visitors. In this neighborhood, you can find plenty of local restaurants and bars, a few chain restaurants and coffee shops, a hotel, a few fitness studios, and the birth place of Gertrude Stein! Part of this neighborhood is also occupied by one of the campuses of the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC).
Thankfully, Allegheny West is a relatively flat neighborhood, unlike many of Pittsburgh's suburban neighborhoods. There are a few very steady and relatively unnoticed inclines, but nothing that would cause your daily walks to be too strenuous or difficult for you or your pup!
The boundaries of Allegheny West include West North Avenue, West Ohio Street, and Ridge Avenue to the north, Brighton Road and Merchant Street to the east, the 65th Infantry Division Memorial Highway to the south, and Allegheny Avenue to the west.
Just a few blocks south of Allegheny West, you will find the North Shore Riverfront Park. This long greenway runs along the Allegheny River and is home to part of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail and the North Shore Trail. The Three Rivers Heritage Trail is a 24-mile trail that runs throughout Pittsburgh and its surrounding areas. Additionally, through this North Shore Riverfront Park, you will find lots of art installations and memorials like a Vietnam Veteran's Monument, the Tribute to Children, water steps, and a Korean War Memorial.
