As a small neighborhood just outside of downtown, Bloomfield is nicknamed 'Pittsburgh’s Little Italy' not only because of its high percentage of Italian immigrants but also for the great food served in this neighborhood. When you head out into this area, however, you are just as likely to come across college students as anyone else because this has become known as the 'cool' part of town. With remnants of the old world seen in its architecture and in the brick roads that still exist on side streets and alleys, a walk through this neighborhood is as much a treat for the dog owner as it is for your faithful hound. Eateries dot the outer perimeter of the neighborhood as well as the main road through it and veterinarians, groomers, and pet stores are within easy reach. Weather in Bloomfield can be cold and snowy in the winter or hot and humid in summer, so take appropriate precautions before heading out.

Bloomfield is situated on a plateau and there are a few elevation changes but not significant ones. You are more likely to find hills on the outer reaches of the neighborhood and flatter ground towards the center. Much of the area does have sidewalks, allowing you to walk safely during the day. At night, be sure to wear reflective clothing because many of the streets do not have lights, stop signs, or crosswalks. Many of the shoulders do have grassy areas for Fido to explore but look out for weather that is very hot or very cold to protect your dog's paws. Protection is a must for your dog’s feet at certain times of day! Avid walkers may find that purchasing a set of dog boots and getting their best friend used to them is a good option since it protects against the heat in the summer and the ice in winter.

There are a lot of greenways in Bloomfield but not all of them are public property. Many property owners will not mind if you use their fields as long as you clean up after yourself, but it is always best to ask first. There are several parks scattered around the area such as Friendship Parklet which is a unique little walking loop in the center of Bloomfield. Osceola Parklet is mostly playground and tennis courts but still has a generous amount of shade and grass. Morrow Park is nothing more than a triangular park between two larger city streets, but if you have been walking and need to stop for a break, there are plenty of benches placed under big shade trees that allow for a nice reprieve.

The greenways do not stop at Bloomfield either as there are many small parks surrounding the neighborhood. Many of these areas have plenty of amenities for both you and Fido to enjoy.
