Garfield is a trendy neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, also known as the Steel City or the City of Bridges! Located only four miles northwest of the downtown area, Garfield is a popular neighborhood for local families and young adults.

Residentially, this neighborhood exhibits many of the typical Pittsburgh traits: adjacent townhomes with a few standalone homes and apartment complexes. Many older homes have also been renovated into multiple units. Originally settled by Irish immigrants, there are still some Irish-Catholic influences in Garfield, especially as it relates to a few of the local churches. Beyond places of worship, this neighborhood also has a grocery store, a community farm, local restaurants and coffee shops, and the Center for PostNatural History.

Outside of Garfield, Pittsburgh is a vibrant city with so many things to see and do! Home to several championship-winning, professional sports teams, museums, plenty of public parks, a local food scene, an ever-increasing number of local breweries, and several colleges, Pittsburgh continues to grow and thrive!

Pittsburgh is known for being a rather hilly city. There are even over 700 public staircases throughout the city, just to help pedestrians navigate the steep inclines. Garfield is definitely no exception, with some streets having over a 20% incline! The hills can sometimes seem worse during the winter months, particularly when there is any snowfall or wintery mix, so please be careful and always remain aware of both you and your pup's energy levels!

Thankfully, even though you will be navigating some steep hills, most of Garfield does have sidewalks for your use! Some are more well-maintained than others as the bricked sidewalks are always a bit uneven. Be sure to watch your step whenever walking!

The boundaries of Garfield include Mossfield Street and Black Street to the north, North Negley Avenue to the east, Penn Avenue to the south, and North Mathilda Street to the west.

Like many Pittsburgh neighborhoods, there are plenty of public parks for you and your pup to explore! The largest greenway in Garfield is Fort Pitt Playground which is home to a playground, a basketball court, a few benches, and a large field for general recreation. The second largest, Garfield greenway actually isn't a public park, but an urban farm. Healcrest Urban Farm is almost two-acres and grows products to make tea, popsicles made with fresh ingredients, and other goods sold at local farmers markets.

All other greenways in Garfield are smaller parks found in residential areas. These include Garfield Commons Park, Kite Hill Park, Hillcrest Park, Kincaid Street Garden, and Nelson Mandela Peace Park. While there may not be a pup park in the area, you will, at least, have plenty of options for pit-stops or to just stop and smell the flowers!

The nearest dog park, Bernard Dog Run, is located two miles to the east of this neighborhood.
