Shadyside is one of the more popular and well-known neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A great mix of residential and commercial spaces, Shadyside draws young professionals and college students with its affordable housing and great combination of eclectic local businesses and well-known brands like Apple, Lululemon, and Gap. It was even named the best neighborhood in Pittsburgh for millennials! Residentially, this Pittsburgh suburb is largely composed of standalone, single-family homes, however, many of them have been converted apartments or condos.

As mentioned, there is more to this neighborhood than homes. You will also find several popular restaurants, coffee shops, and Pamela's Diner, one of the more well-known Pittsburgh breakfast places! There are also a few schools, art galleries, public parks, medical services, a large hospital, and churches throughout Shadyside.

Pittsburgh experiences all four distinct seasons. Weather can always range from hot and muggy to icy and windy, depending on the time of year.

Shadyside is a rather pedestrian-friendly neighborhood, so pups are typically welcomed as well . Walnut Street is home to many of the local businesses in the area, so that area will have more traffic, both from vehicles and other pedestrians. However, many of these businesses will place a water bowl out for your pup. If you're lucky, some may even have a bowl of dog treats out!

Most of Shadyside has well-maintained sidewalks, however, some areas are a bit uneven and cracked, so watch where you are stepping. Additionally, most of the sidewalks are lined with grass and have large trees to provide shade during the hot and sunny summer days. However, like much of Pittsburgh, Shadyside has quite a few hills which contribute to some of the cracked sidewalks.

The borders of Shadyside include Center Avenue to the north, Penn Avenue to the east, Fifth Avenue to the south, and North Neville Street to the west.

While looking at a map can give you the impression that Shadyside has plenty of public parks, this is, unfortunately, not the case. Many of the greenways located in this neighborhood are athletic fields or greenways associated with local schools or churches and typically are not pup-friendly. The one public greenway in this neighborhood is the Mellon Spray Park, located in the southeast corner of the neighborhood. This spray park offers a play to cool down during those muggy, summer days.

Thankfully, there are a few greenways in surrounding neighborhoods that you and your pup can explore. To the north, you can find Enright Parklet, Penn Plaza Greenspace, Garland Parklet, East Liberty Town Square, East Liberty Park, and Fairfield Park.

To the south, you will find Schenley Park, one of the largest greenways in the city of Pittsburgh. This public park is home to a the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, a golf course, a historic landmark, a sports complex, plenty of hiking trails, and a great view of the downtown area!
