Shandon is a large, residential community located in Columbia, South Carolina. Located just two miles outside of downtown Columbia, Shandon is primarily home to standalone, single-family homes and a few smaller apartment or condo complexes. Despite the large presence of residential buildings, Shandon is also home to some local businesses. Along Devine Street, you will find a plethora of local boutiques, a nail salon, several restaurants and bars, a popular and local coffee shop, a grocery store, and several other local businesses like dentists and lawyers. Beyond Devine Street, however, you can also find several churches and a school in the Shandon neighborhood.

Columbia, the state capital of South Carolina, is a growing city. It's home to the University of South Carolina, the state government, and one of the largest military bases in the country. Columbia is a good mix of college students, families, and young professionals. For recreational purposes, Columbia is also home to a well-known riverfront trail, several theaters and performing arts centers, and several museums.

For the most part, you and Fido should have a splendid and relaxing walk through the Shandon neighborhood. Since most of this community is residential in nature, you can create walking routes that take you along quieter streets with tree-lined sidewalks and plenty of grass! Devine Street, which is home to many of the commercial spaces in the neighborhood, is a four-lane street with a higher speed limit, so please exercise caution if any of your walking routes pass along this popular and busy roadway!

Shandon also has quite a few hills. Depending on your routes, you may experience both gradual and steeper inclines. Thankfully, with well-maintained sidewalks, you won't have to share the roadways with vehicles!

The borders of Shandon include Lee Street and Millwood Avenue to the north, Kilbourne Road to the east, Rosewood Drive to the south, and Harden Street and Santee Avenue to the west.

While Shandon is a lovely residential community, it only has two public parks for its residents to enjoy. Emily Douglas Park, the larger of the two Shandon greenways, is located in the northwest part of the neighborhood. This public park is home to a local recreation center which is known for hosting summer activities for local children. Beyond that, Emily Douglas Park also has an amphitheater for performances, a playground, a spray pool for Columbia's "famously hot" summer, and a dog park!

The smaller of the two greenways, Sims Park, is located on the eastern side of Shandon. This park is home to a spray pool during the summer, a playground, picnicking areas, and a park shelter with restrooms.

Other greenways, all within walking distance of the Shandon neighborhood, include the W. Gordon Belser Arboretum, Heathwood Park, Martin Luther King Jr. Park, Hollywood Park, Rosewood Park, Lester Bates Park, and Valencia Park.
