Depending on where you are in the downtown area, you might encounter some major hills. The roads have steep inclines, particularly near the river, so if you or your pet aren't feeling a hill climb, stick to the northern part of the neighborhood where the streets are slightly flatter. If you want to take a leisurely walk and maybe do some window shopping, considering hanging around Market Square. This small area is for pedestrians only, so you'll be away from busy roadways. The square features several different shops and a pretty area to relax.

Downtown Knoxville is essentially the center of the city, meaning that it's the most crowded with cars, bikes, and people. With heavier traffic, it's important to keep your pet on a tighter leash on the sidewalks and look both ways before crossing the street. Avoid walking near the ramps to the major highways and you'll be sure to have an enjoyable time in the neighborhood.

While Downtown Knoxville is very city-like, you still have easy access to numerous greenways and park areas. In the middle of the neighborhood is Charles Krutch Park, a small green park featuring unique public art. This is the perfect spot to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and possibly relax underneath the shady trees that dot this area. In the western part of the neighborhood is World's Fair Park, a sprawling greenway that features walking paths, fountains, and ponds to enjoy. Both of these options can make great destinations to take your pooch.

If you head south by the riverside, you can hop on one of the city's greenways which will take you on an adventure down miles and miles of trails that follow the Tennessee River. Pets are, of course, allowed on the greenways, but must be kept on a leash at all times.
