Johnston Terrace is a mixed-use neighborhood located in East Austin, Texas. There are commercial and light industrial sections on the west, south, and east sides of the neighborhood as well as a centrally located school and a green belts on the north side. The west side thoroughfare has a fast food outlet and convenience store while an animal shelter and veterinary hospital are located on the south side. 


Dog walkers in Johnston Terrace do not need to worry about dressing for cold weather in the winter as temperatures are well above the freezing mark. During the spring and summer months, there is a risk of severe storms and flash floods. Austin lies in “tornado alley” and when dangerous weather occurs, pedestrians and pets should take shelter immediately. Summer weather also has extreme heat. Johnston Terrace has train tracks along the northern border which should be avoided by dog walkers. Airport Road is located along the east side and Ed Bluestein Boulevard runs along the south and east borders. Ed Bluestein Boulevard is also a major freeway with lots of noise and high-speed traffic and should be avoided. 

This neighborhood has industrial and commercial areas which include hazardous waste sites and these areas are not pedestrian-friendly. Industrial sections have less landscaping, more pavement, and increased traffic. Residential areas have moderate homes of more recent development, landscaped yards, sidewalks, and grassy areas, making them more desirable walking destinations for you and your pet. 

The terrain in Johnston Terrace is flat and easy to navigate for pedestrians and pets of all ability and mobility levels. There is some natural terrain along the Boggy Creek which runs through the north side of the neighborhood.

The East Boggy Creek Greenbelt runs along the north side of Johnston Terrace. Not only does this area provide heavily wooded areas and the creek to explore, but a branch of the Walnut Creek Trail runs along the greenway to Govalle Neighborhood Park. The trail is easy to traverse for pups and people of all ability levels. 


The Govalle Neighborhood Park can be accessed via this walking trail and also has lots of recreational facilities including a swimming pool, basketball courts, sports fields, and a playground to enjoy. 


On the east side of Johnston Terrace is Bolm District Park which provides 68 acres of natural space with hiking and biking trails, wildlife viewing, and picnic sites providing views of the Colorado River. Finally, to the southwest, the Colorado River Park Wildlife Sanctuary has a nature trail looping around it to take in the local flora and fauna. Remember to check leash regulations in these areas before heading out.
