Walking in Laguna San Luis with your dog first thing in the morning or later in the evening is preferable to braving the daytime heat with your pup.

Laguna San Luis is located on a flat exposed area of Galveston Island. Because there are tidal planes and the region is just above sea level, homes in the area are elevated to protect them from flooding and surges that can occur with gulf storms. The San Luis Beach is located to the south and is accessible on foot. The San Luis Pass Road runs south of the community and becomes the Bluewater Highway. The residential area has winding roads and cul de sacs and homes are well spaced with large open areas and a few trees.

The terrain is very exposed with little shade in summer when temperatures can be very hot. There are no sidewalks or paved pedestrian paths in the area, so you will need to walk on landscaped property or roadways with your dog to traverse the area. Watch for traffic and be sure to clean up after your dog.

The San Luis Beach is located just south of Laguna San Luis and can be reached by locals with their pets on foot. All Galveston beaches are accessible by dogs on a leash and this beach makes a great walking destination for you and your canine companion. In summer, you may want to avoid the height of the day when sand becomes too hot and uncomfortable for exposed puppy paws. Remember to come prepared to clean up after your pup so the beach can be enjoyed by all.

To the south, the Kelly Hambly Nature Trail can be reached by vehicle. This 5.6-acre park and trail have beach access and plenty of natural habitats for local water birds and wildlife. Locals can even take in the monarch migration in late September and early October. Be sure to keep your dog securely leashed so as not to disturb wildfire in this natural area.
