Sunnyside is a large neighborhood south of central Houston, Texas. The neighborhood is inside Belt 8 of State Highway 288 and is characterised by a mixture of industrial as well as residential buildings. The close-knit community’s slogan is ‘Sunnyside Pride’ which is telling of the type of connectedness the people of Sunnyside have. The rich Africa-American history of Sunnyside dates back to 1860 and its connection to Houston began in 1956 when it was annexed to the large city.

Due to the subtropical location of Houston, Sunnyside, like its name suggests, experiences lots of hot, sunny weather. However, during spring, the state commonly experiences thunderstorms and maybe even flooding.

Sunnyside doesn’t have much in terms of facilities within the neighborhood’s boundaries, however, the road system makes Downtown Houston an easy location to get to. Here, there are plenty of amenities such as Big Tex Feed and Pet Supply, a great family-owned business that even offers delivery!

The large neighborhood of Sunnyside may be described as rather sparse and scattered with large roads and intersections separating pockets of industrial buildings as well as residential housing. All the buildings in the area are low lying which means the community does feel rather suburban with an industrial twist. Here, the artificial environment of the suburban community is its strongest characteristics with many houses separated from the road by small front yards and a small driveway.

The city of Houston and the surrounding area is particularly flat and the community of Sunnyside is extremely similar. This makes the neighborhood extremely easy to walk around and the quiet nature of the pockets of residential streets make a pleasant area to stroll. A helpful tip is to steer clear of the State Highway 288. Although there is plenty of sidewalk to stretch your legs, the fast moving cars don’t make for a relaxing walk.

Sunnyside is home to Sunnyside Park, a local green space which, to its northern end, has a large field and footpaths to walk around. The southern tip is a thin strip of grassland which is perfect for a weekday stroll as to get from one end to another takes around 20 minutes, the ideal walking time for a short walk.

Grimes Park is situated to the west of the neighborhood as it a smaller, more humble park. Nevertheless, if you are in the area and fancy a walk, it is the ideal spot to have a short stroll around before heading into the big city.

Surrounding the area of Sunnyside, there are small pockets of green space and varying parks to explore. If you're looking for a larger walk perhaps for the weekend, F.M. Law Park is just a five-minute drive from the center of Sunnyside and offers plenty of space to stretch your legs.
