Castle Wood Forest is a north San Antonio, Texas neighborhood, located less than a 20-minute commute from the city’s central business district. There are no local businesses or commercial areas in this residential neighborhood, however, there is a local grocer and eateries that can be accessed on foot to the east via George Road. A greenway with tennis courts is available in the Castle Wood Forest district as well.

San Antonio enjoys warm weather most of the year. While winters are cool, they rarely see snowfall or temperatures below the freezing mark, so you don't need to bundle up to take your dog out. Summer temperatures can be extreme with heat and humidity. You can avoid some of the heat by taking your dog out early in the morning or later in the evening. You should also check local forecasts to avoid severe thunderstorms which can create hazardous conditions for pedestrians and pets.

Castle Wood Forest is bordered by George Road on the south, Lockhill Selma Road on the west, Hunter's Bow on the east, and the Hunters Creek neighborhood on the north. This is a developed, suburban, residential neighborhood with attractive homes of brick and stone construction. Properties are generously sized and well landscaped. The area has lots of trees providing shade on hot summer days and a small natural green space and ravine on the southwest corner. There is also a treed area on the east side between the neighborhood and a local recreation club.

The area has separate pedestrian sidewalks on the residential streets which allow you and your dog to walk the area without having to share local roads with traffic. Traffic in the community is mostly residential as there are no main thoroughfares running through the district which makes the area quiet and peaceful. The terrain is relatively level with no steep hills to trek up and down.

Dog walkers and their pups will find it only a 30-minute walk to Phil Hardberger Park. This beautiful park has plenty of natural and recreational areas with many trails. Your dog will enjoy hikes in the park along tree-lined trails that provide shade in the summer.

Trails in the area include the Savanna Loop which is just under two miles long, the Oak Loop Trail which is just under one mile and the Salado Creek Greenway North Trail which is 14 miles, as well as the Geology Trail and the Water Loop. Your dog must remain leashed on park trails and you must clean up after them as well.

The west side dog park is an enclosed off-leash run with separate areas for large and small dogs, water fountains, and obstacles for your pup to play in or on. The east side dog park has lots of shade, obstacles, fountains, seating, and separate large and small areas as well.
