River Road is a historic community that is a short 10-minute commute north of downtown, San Antonio, Texas. Area residents can walk to local services and amenities in the commercial area on the northwest side at Mulberry Avenue which includes shops, a gas station, local eateries, and banking services.

Dog owners in the region can reach veterinary services at Pet Shotz, a local animal hospital north of the Japanese Tea Garden.

San Antonio weather is pleasant for walking most of the year with warm spring and fall weather, mild winters, and hot summers. When extreme heat occurs in summer months, avoid walking during the heat of the day and try cooler mornings and evenings for outings with your pet. Thunderstorms are frequent occurrences in summer months and tornadoes can even occur in the area. Check weather forecasts for imminent storms and take shelter when they are occurring as these weather systems are hazardous to exposed pedestrian and pets.

River Road is a historic residential neighborhood. The region is irregular shaped, located east of the McAllister Freeway and surrounded on the south, east, and north by Brackenridge Park and Brackenridge Golf Course. The greenway and freeway separate this district from surrounding communities and make it private and secluded.

The San Antonio River runs through the community and has a ravine and heavily wooded areas associated with it. The region was developed in the early 20th century and has diverse homes reflecting the period in which they were developed. Private properties are well landscaped with established large shade trees which create shade along streetscapes.

Most of the area is relatively flat with only some very slight gentle inclines and no steep hills to trek up, so people and pets of all mobility levels can get around. There is a large sports stadium on the north side and some commercial activity in the northwest section of the neighborhood with more traffic.

Brackenridge Park stretches around three sides of the River Road community. The southern side is the location of the golf course which is not accessible to dogs and, on the north side, there is a Japanese garden which is also not doggy-friendly. The rest of Brackenridge Park allows dogs on a leash and has much to offer for you and your canine companion. There's 343 acres of natural area and great hiking trails which include the Wilderness Loop which winds through a beautiful wooded area with lots of shade and the Waterworks Loop which runs along the San Antonio River. The park has water fountains, many with doggie water supplies at their bases.

Davis Park is located on the west banks of the river and is a large open playfield extending into the River Road neighborhood. It's a great place for a romp with your pup in a grassy area for a change of scenery!
