Thousand Oaks is a neighborhood on the north side of San Antonio, Texas. Residents of Thousand Oaks have about a 30-minute commute to the downtown business core of the city. There is a commercial area on the south side with a YMCA family center and many shops and services including restaurants and a local pharmacy within easy reach.

Pet owners can also walk with their pets to a local veterinarian, Travelling Trails Veterinary Clinic, which is situated southwest of the community.

San Antonio has mild winters, but summers are hot and sunny. Make sure you take water for you and your pet on long walks, find shady locations for treks, and try to walk earlier or later in the day when temperatures are less extreme. Severe thunderstorms can also pose hazards to pedestrians and pets with high winds, flash flooding, and lightning. Take shelter when these storms are imminent.

Thousand Oaks is bordered by The Bluff of Henderson Pass neighborhood on the southwest, the Scattered Oaks neighborhood on the southeast, and a power corridor along the north side.

The northern section of the neighborhood is composed of single-family detached homes with apartment complexes located centrally and a commercial area on the southern tip. Homes in the area are attractive with well landscaped and maintained private properties. Some of the areas have hills with grades that may be strenuous for some people and pets to climb up, especially in hot weather, while other areas are more level with only gentle inclines. If you or your pet have mobility issues, you may want to plan your walks to avoid hills in the area.

Sidewalks are prevalent along residential and commercial thoroughfares and provide safe pedestrian ways. There is a creek and green space along the west side of Thousand Oaks providing natural terrain in the region.

Mud Creek Park is located on the northeast border of the Thousand Oaks neighborhood. This natural park has 1.4 miles of trails and lots of shady treed areas. The terrain is uneven and there are some elevation changes along the ravine. Use caution during and after flash floods when dirt trails and areas near waterways can become treacherous.

With a 10-minute drive to the south, Thousand Oaks canines and their people can travel to Mcallister Park and Mcallister Dog park.  This park has lots of natural terrain and trails with a fenced-in off-leash dog park that has separate areas for large and small dogs, drinking fountains for pups, agility equipment, and toys.

Another 10 minutes to the south, the Lady Bird Johnson Dog Park also has an off-leash area and natural wooded areas with hiking trails. You should supervise your dog in off-leash parks and be prepared to clean up after them.
