Del Ray, as a neighborhood, is largely residential with single-family homes and duplexes. There are also a few apartment complexes throughout the neighborhood. However, Mount Vernon Avenue, which goes down the center of the neighborhood, is home to several local businesses like coffee shops, restaurants, and a well-attended farmers market. Del Ray is also home to a public library branch, several churches, and a few convenience stores.
As a suburb to a rather large city, Del Ray is largely composed of artificial terrain. Even the parks are frequently manicured, rather than having naturally growing plants. The benefits of this more urban environment, however, include well-maintained sidewalks throughout the neighborhood. Many of these sidewalks are even lined with mid-sized trees, particularly in the residential parts of Del Ray.
Additionally, Del Ray and its surrounding neighborhoods are all relatively flat. You and your pup should be able to plan a leisurely walk, rather than having to worry about steep inclines or drops. The boundaries of Del Ray include East Glebe Road to the north, Richmond Highway to the east, East Monroe Avenue to the south, and Russell Road to the northwest. Mount Vernon Road is home to most of the commercial spaces in this neighborhood and may have a bit more traffic than the surrounding residential areas. Many of these local businesses even place out water bowls for the local neighborhood pups!
A more unique park in this neighborhood is Mount Jefferson Park. This long, skinny greenway is located on the east side of the neighborhood. While this park does have a playground, it's also a prominent section of the Mt. Jefferson Park Trail, a half-mile trail that is constantly being updated and expanded. Goat Hill Park, another prominent greenway in Del Ray, is home to a playground, a large field for general recreation, and a wooded area. This is a perfect option for you and your pup to explore if you're looking for a bit of an escape from city life.
Other local greenways include Landover Park, Nicholas A. Colasanto Park, and Judy Lowe Neighborhood Park.
