Max Meadows, although almost invisible on the map, boasts a very large and gorgeous park, the New River Trail State Park! Get ready for some outdoor exploration with your pup on this 57 mile long park. Converted from an old, abandoned railroad, the New River Trail now features a gift shops, horesback riding trips, bike and canoe rentals, fishing, camping, and more. The trail has a mild and gentle slope, making it pawfect for family trips with kids and doggoes who want to partake in some light biking or leisurely walking. The historic and beautiful New River is parallel to the park, and stretches for roughly 39 miles. Of course, Fido is welcome to strut his stuff in this State Park, as in all parks in Virginia!

Your pup will love a drive to the W Wind Drive neighborhood in Max Meadows, where you both can enjoy a guided tour of the West Wind Farm Vineyards. Open year-round, the this fourth generation farm offers owners to come taste exquisite wines with their pup, who will be happy to offer Fido some water and treats upon your visit! This small home-grown winery is conveniently located south of Max Meadows near the State Park. Make sure to pull off the freeway to visit this sweet and charming local winery! Pets must be leashed at all times while on the grounds, but are welcome to sit and sip alongside you!
Take a detour off the freeway to set up camp over at the Pioneer Village Campground located in the Reed Creek Riverbend neighborhood. This campground isn't your average campground. A picturesque, clean, and spacious environment welcomes you to explore its pawtacular grounds and rolling creek. There is pawlenty of space to walk the doggoes and have a little outdoor excursion. The owners of the Pioneer Village Campground show their furry and human customers warmly. Hospitality is their motto! You will love their pawtastic, remote facilities set in a scenic meadow right near the Reed Creek. Pups should be leashed when outside your tent or RV.
Visit the Pauley Flatwoods neighborhood located in Austinville for a grand day out at the Shot Tower State Park, which is also managed by the State Park in Max Meadows. The Shot Tower State Park is a tranquil location to take Fido and family for a historic walk. The Shot Tower is over 200 years old and was used to make ammunition. Admission is free and guests may climb the tower, although doggoes are only allowed on the grounds and not in any buildings. From the Shot Tower, you and Fido can stroll through the walking/hiking paths along the scenic 39 mile New River. Get ready for a woofing good time out in the Blue Ridge Highlands!
Buckle in your furry bud and drive a little ways west to the neighboring town of Wytheville, where there are a barkload of wooftastic pup-friendly hotels located in the East Wytheville neighborhood. For doggoes traveling on a tight budget, both the Motel 6 Wytheville and the Red Roof Inn & Suites Wytheville offer pups to come sleepover for absolutely no extra fee per night. Pooches of any size are also welcome! But if you're craving a bit of extra comfort and style, the Days Inn Wytheville is just around the corner. This hotel is loved by doggoe owners for its convenient grassy area where Fido can do his business before bed! No matter where you choose to stay, the East Wytheville neighborhood has got your back.
Craving some fresh air, or maybe even a furrific meaty treat? Then leash up Fido and head to the Central Wytheville neighborhood where you will find Skeeter's World Famous Hotdogs! Either for breakfast or lunch, Skeeter's always has puptastic bites for humans and their doggoes. Enjoy a barking good menu of pawcakes, biscuits, hotdogs, barbecue, chili, and more. Dine out on their single pooch-friendly table, or take your order to go and head across the street to enjoy it as a picnic in the Withers Park! The Withers Park is a pup-lover's pawadise, with plenty of canines to sniff out and dog owners for you to meet. It's a much-loved local hot spot that's not to be missed!
