Meridian is considered a gateway neighborhood into the city of Bellingham, one of the northernmost cities in Washington state. The neighborhood of Meridian is a very mixed zone with residential, commercial and industrial space, however, it is mostly home to high-density housing and commercial shopping centers. Thanks to recent developments, your pampered pooch has access to all the best toys and treats available with vets and grooming all within reach. Whether you are looking for food, something to drink, or a quick stop at the local grocery store, you will find just about everything you could possibly want.

Weather in Meridian can vary quite a bit from year to year. Winters have been known to be either harsh, with freezing temperatures and wind coming out of the Fraser Valley, or mild. It all depends on the weather patterns. This far north, Bellingham is typically very mild in the summer months. Expect good walking weather from spring to fall.

Western Washington is known for its hilly terrain and the neighborhood of Meridian is no exception. While you might find worse hills in other neighborhoods, Meridian is still pretty hilly in most areas. Some of the streets do offer less of an elevation change so if you are just starting out, you might want to scout out which streets are going to be the easiest for you and your pup. If you are looking for a workout, you will love this area because it has the right amount of elevation as well as some level ground to make it a great interval training area.

You do need to be cautious about where you walk because not all roads have sidewalks or even shoulders. If you must walk on a road that does not have a safe place to stroll, be sure to wear bright clothing so you are highly visible to motorists you are sharing the road with.

Meridian itself does not have any greenways, but there are a number of them that are fairly easy to access throughout the region. Just to the south is Cornwall Park where you will find multiple trails as well as a creek and a lake. The area is wooded and has a fair amount of fields as well.

A bit further to the southwest is Squalicum Park which, in addition to walking trails and a creek, has a dog park.

Whatcom Falls Park is a bit further away, but this park is much larger than anything else in the region. It has many trails with an abundance of hiking spots and amazing sights. The park is a treasure trove that is hard to find in metropolitan areas. Whatcom Falls also has a dog park, so if setting your pup free to roam is your goal but you also want to spend time in nature, this park has all of that and more.
