Ellsworth Springs is a neighborhood located north of Portland, Oregon. Ellsworth Springs is a highly walkable neighborhood designed for pedestrians and cyclists to be able to access local amenities and navigate the area on foot. Mill Plain Boulevard is lined with local businesses including shops and restaurants that can be accessed by pedestrians. A shopping district in the adjacent neighborhood to the northeast has a large pet store available for dog owners, but the walkability is hampered by the freeway on the east side which must be crossed where pedestrian ways are available.

Portland weather is amenable to walking, although it can be wet at times. Have a good rain jacket available to ward off showers. Summer days tend to be warm with few severe storms or extreme heat which make walking safer and more pleasant. Winters are colder and wetter, so a warm, waterproof jacket is a necessity for dog walkers that venture out regularly during winter months.

Ellsworth Springs is bordered by the Lewis and Clark Highway on the south, Mill Plain Boulevard on the north, War Veterans Memorial Freeway on the east, and 98th Avenue on the west. The neighborhood is made up mostly of single-family dwellings, but there are apartment complexes and condominium developments on the east side as well.

The area is heavily treed and landscaped with plenty of greenery and attractive private properties. The terrain slopes down toward the river, so if you walk down to the south, you will need to hike up to the north again. Plan your walk according to you and your pet's ability.

Some streets have sidewalks, although often only on one side and some areas are devoid of separate pedestrian ways altogether. When walking with your dog, choose routes where separate pedestrian ways are present, if possible and when necessary, to share the road with traffic. Keep your dog securely leashed and face oncoming vehicles.

The Ellsworth Springs Woods is situated on the south side of the neighborhood. This natural wooded area and spring is densely forested and provides habitat to local flora and fauna. When enjoying this greenway, be aware that this natural area does not have maintained trails and terrain can be treacherous.

Ellsworth Spring residents and their canine companions can cross the highway to the south and travel west to the Winter Community Park. This 12-acre park provides beach access and a beautiful greenway with spectacular views. The Waterfront Renaissance Trail can be accessed from here and travels for 5 miles along the river to downtown Vancouver.

Other parks can be accessed along the trail. This greenway trail is paved and is multi-use, used by dog walkers, cyclists, skaters, and other pedestrians. Keep your dog on a leash and be prepared to clean up after your pup to be respectful to other trail users.
