Vancouver Heights is located north of Portland in the Vancouver area. There is a medical and shopping center on the northern border that is walkable for area residents. Shops, restaurants, and services can be reached by residents and their pets on foot.

The weather in Portland is ideal for walking most of the year. Spring and fall are temperate, although sometimes rainy, and a raincoat will keep your walks with your furry friend drier! Summers are warm, but not overly hot, and extreme heat rarely hampers dog walkers from taking their daily strolls with their pets. Winters are cooler, although daytime temperatures usually rise above freezing, so snow and ice does not persist. When the temperature is around freezing, pathways can be icy. Good footwear will be necessary to safely navigate slippery sidewalks. A warm, waterproof raincoat will be necessary for winter so rain doesn't dampen your spirits or ruin your walks with your pet.

Vancouver Heights is bordered by Mill Plain Boulevard on the north, MacArthur Boulevard on the southwest, 98th Avenue on the east side, and the Lewis and Clark Highway on the far southern border. There is a cemetery and golf course which provides manicured landscape on the west side of the district. There is also a shopping center and commercial activity on the north side of the neighborhood.

This developed residential and commercial neighborhood has a small town feel. Most residences are bungalow style dwellings with lots of trees and large lawns. There are no sidewalks in the community, so pedestrians and pets need to share the road with local traffic. When using roadways while walking your dog, keep your dog close by your side, walk on the right side of the road, and be cautious.

Most of Vancouver Height is situated on level ground, however, the terrain does slope down towards the river.
