Prairie du Sac is a small community in the Wisconsin River Valley. Its name dates from the early days of French fur traders and refers to its location near the Sauk Indian settlement that was there. Later, Prairie du Sac was established as a Yankee-English village. Today, the town is a dog-friendly area that boasts three veterinarians who are ready to see your pooch through any issue.

Sauk Prairie Recreation Area welcomes hiking and other outdoor activities with your leashed pup. Numerous neighborhood parks, such as Marion Park, provides greenspace throughout the Prairie du Sac community for gathering and activity. Your leashed pup is welcomed with you as you enjoy a stroll through the open grassy areas of the parks, or a restful outdoor meal on one of the benches or picnic tables. Veteran's Memorial Park allows dog-friendly overnight tent camping or a leashed walk through the large open grassy area and trees. 

Stay at Merry Macs Campground when traveling through the area.     You'll enjoy a leashed walk of moderate difficulty at the Spring Green Preserve State Natural Area, just 24 miles from Prairie du Sac. If you visit in the spring, you'll enjoy the beautiful wildflowers and cacti in bloom along the 3.2-mile walk. Ferry Bluff State Natural Area is great for a short leashed-hike with lovely views of the Wisconsin River and the river valley. This area is closed for bald eagle nesting in the winter months. Enjoy a glide in your canoe or a walk along the beach as you encounter a variety of wildlife and the beautiful blooms of the water lilies.

    Nineteen miles from Prairie du Sac is where you’ll find White Mound County Park. White Mound is 1100 acres of pristine land surrounding a 104-acre lake, perfect for kayaking, canoeing, and swimming with your pooch. The park gets its name from a past village whose own name reflected the white mounds of limestone that appear in this area. An abandoned limestone kiln from the village can still be seen in the park. The 56 campsites here have fire rings, picnic tables, and water. You and your pup will enjoy leashed walks around the lake and throughout the campground. For more adventuring, visit Honey Creek State Natural Area for some serene, picturesque hiking. Watch for the beautiful waterfall and cave along the way.
