The Ramones famously sang about hitching a ride to Rockaway Beach, but did you know that this famous stretch of shoreline is also dog-friendly if you visit at the right time of year?
From the Memorial Day weekend through until Labor Day, dogs are not allowed on the sand or boardwalk at Rockaway Beach. However, they're more than welcome at all other times of the year, provided they're kept on a leash and always on their best behavior.
Located just 10 miles from Brooklyn, this popular beach can often get quite crowded, particularly on warmer days, so you'll need to make sure your pooch is OK with being surrounded by lots people before you visit. And while the crowds are seen as a drawback by some people, they also mean that this is a grrr-eat spot for you and your pet to enjoy an hour or two just sitting back and people-watching.
Many will remember the devastating scenes of destruction in and around the area following Superstorm Sandy in October 2012, but Rockaway Beach has undergone a lot of rebuilding since then and it's once again an exciting and vibrant place to visit. Your dog will love strolling along the sand, checking out all the interesting sights and smells, and getting a bit of sunshine with plenty of other New Yorkers.
Of course, you'll need to be careful to ensure that you abide by all the posted rules of this iconic beach. Dogs must be on a leash of no longer than six feet at all times, and you'll need to have plastic baggies handy so you can clean up after your furry friend. If you take responsibility for your dog's actions and respect the rights of other beach visitors, you and your dog will be able to enjoy a paw-fect day out at Rockaway Beach.
