Just 5 miles east of McCloud, California lies the dog-friendly Fowlers Campground. Located on the Upper McCloud River at an elevation of 3,300 feet, the campground offers more facilities and activities than your average campsite, making it the most popular campsite in the McCloud area. It’s a perfect getaway for both large and small groups of campers.
Oak woodland and mixed conifer surround the campground, but what particularly adds beauty to Fowlers Campground is its proximity to the majestic Mt. Shasta that stands tall at 14,200 feet. Fowlers is also popular because of the nearby waterfalls ranging from 15 to 50 feet high. You can access these waterfalls by road or via the McCloud River Trail (more on this below). Not to mention, the campground also gets you up close and personal with various plant and animal species.
The campground has 39 sites, of which 8 are available on a first-come-first-served basis. There are large tables for each camping group as well as fire rings. Piped drinking water is another plus. You may also have a resident host as well. Depending on where you are camping, there are also food storage lockers that keep your eatables safe from bears.
As already mentioned, you can access the McCloud waterfalls via the riverside trail. There are three waterfalls, which makes it a three-mile round trip, give or take. You can swim or fish, or both. You can also drive to the waterfalls via paved road. And of course, if you are taking Fido along, keep poop bags handy so you can keep the site clean.
Along with the Lower, Middle, and Upper McCloud waterfalls, Fowlers Campground also connects you to nearby towns of Mt. Shasta and McCloud, both within 30 minutes of the campground via car. Nearby attractions also include the McCloud Reservoir, Lakin Dam Fishing, and the Cattle Camp Swimming Hole. In short, there is enough to keep you and Fido busy and happy!
