Sitting on a shady flat above the Smith River is the spacious and highly popular Panther Flat Campground. This campground is located in the Six Rivers National Forest in northern California. With the bright blue waters of the Smith River and huckleberry bushes, this campground is ideal for campers who are big on privacy. And it’s also one of the most dog-friendly campsites out there!
Panther Flat is located near a mature forest with fir, madrone, and cedar trees. Overall, the region is highly vegetated and is filled with huckleberry shrubs as we already described above. Talk about the extra shade and snacks! The Smith River has up to Class 5 whitewater rapids.
The camp has one double site, but several single-family sites are available. As far as the facilities are concerned, Panther Flat is one of the most modern campgrounds in the region. Each campsite has a campfire ring with a grill along with a picnic table. Drinking water is provided on-site. You can also get free maps and brochures from the Visitors Center at the Gasquet Ranger Station.
Even though you can enjoy your camping trip by lighting a fire and doing a BBQ, there is a variety of activities in the Panther Flat campground. You can go swimming, rafting, and fishing in the Smith River. Popular catches include cutthroat trout, steelhead, and salmon. You can also enjoy sunbathing by the river. While there are no trails in Panther Flat, you can find several within a 10-mile distance for biking, horse riding, or hiking. Just remember to carry some poop bags if you’re taking Fido along.
While there’s much to enjoy inside the campground, you can always head outside to visit the California Redwood National Park within 20 miles of Panther Flat. To sum up, this campground has everything to keep you and your pooch active and happy!
