Description

Cape Lookout National Seashore was authorized in 1966 and designated a Biosphere Reserve in 1986. The protected areas cover a total area of 28,243 acres of land in Outer Banks, Carteret County, North Carolina and are managed by the National Park Service.

One of the closest and prominently familiar places to the Cape Lookout National Seashore is Harkers Island, North Carolina. The national seashore’s visiting area can be found on the eastern end of Harkers Island and about 20 miles east of Beaufort, North Carolina.

Some of the special features that you can see and experience when you get to this protected area include a wide variety of flora and fauna including plant and animal species like the Loggerhead sea turtle, Piping Plover, and Seabeach Amaranth. The national seashore is also intrinsically attractive because of the series of undeveloped barrier islands extending 56 miles along the lower Outer Banks.

This area is also attractive because it is home to dunes, beaches, Cape Lookout Lighthouse, and the historic Portsmouth Village. Besides these attractions, Cape Lookout National Seashore is also popular because several recreational activities can be enjoyed including fishing, camping, hunting, boating, swimming, hiking, guided tours, and wildlife viewing.

Dog’s are allowed into Cape Lookout National Seashore, but you have to observe strict rules if you want to avoid any inconvenience to yourself or to other visitors. Some basic rules to be observed include ensuring that your dog is always on a leash or secured in an enclosure. You must also ensure that the dog’s leash is at most six feet in length.

If you wish to walk, hike or visit any area of the park, it is important to be aware that some areas are prohibited and others that are not. These details can easily be discovered by asking the management before venturing around with your pooch. That said, you can basically only visit Great Island and Long Point Cabins with your dog. Most other areas are prohibited for dogs and other pets.
