Ocean Beach Dog Beach is one of the first leash-free dog beaches in the United States. Often called “the Original Dog Beach,” the beach is about a mile long and sandy, with rock jetties intermittently scattered throughout. The beach is available to dog owners and enthusiasts alike, and also offers attractions like surfing, fishing, and volleyball.
There are few requirements to bringing your dog to the Ocean Beach Dog Beach. The City of San Diego requests that you clean up after your pup, make sure that they’re fully vaccinated and that your dog is wearing a current license on their collar. The beach has plenty of garbage cans available to help make sure everything is neat.
This beach has great views, including a terrific view of Cabrillo, and also connects to the Ocean Beach Municipal Pier, which offers a nice spot for walks and a restaurant for hungry beachgoers after playing in the sun with your pets. On the other side of the parking lot from the beach, a grassy picnic area is available, allowing you to make a day of it and bring food and drink and give your dog a change of scenery.
This is a very popular beach, so you should expect a lot of people – and pooches – there at all times. If you have a dog that isn’t very social, this may not be the best beach experience for them. However, if your dog loves to make new friends, most people who bring their pets to the beach are extremely dog- and family-positive.
Because of the abundance of leisure options, including the volleyball court at the north end, surfing, and swimming, this beach is a great place to bring your family. Locals love the beach and the Dog Beach Committee works hard to maintain and preserve the beautiful beach for all pets and owners.
