Dog leashes are required to be no more than 12 feet in length. All other times of the year, dogs may enjoy off-leash frolicking on the sand and in the water. However, beach officials require that all dogs be no more than 30 feet from their owners and that they do not disturb other visitors to the beach. Owners are also expected to carry a lead with them at all times in case of an emergency.
A current rabies vaccination is required and proof of said vaccination must be evident via the correct tag exhibited on the dog's collar. City licensing is also mandatory for all residents of Dare County. The Dare County SPCA kindly provides Safe Pet Vacation Kits for all visitors to the area. These packets include helpful information regarding what to do in case your pet becomes lost as well as temporary identification tags and more.
Visitors to the beach should bring a bottle of water and a suitable drinking container with them to help keep Fido well-hydrated. It is unknown if bathrooms for public use are available on-site. It is required by law that all owners carry poop bags with them to pick up and properly dispose of all canine waste materials. Failure to do so is punishable by a minimum fine of $50.
