Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area finds its home in Kailua Kona, Hawaii. This recreational area sits upon the same grounds as a formerly operational airport which primarily transported tourists to and from the big island of Hawaii. Today, the deserted landing strip still graces the premises.

Dogs may join their owners on the grounds of Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area, but they must remain leashed at all times and aren't permitted to enter the water. Drinking water is available via the on-site bathrooms, and there are also outdoor showers for public use. Poop bags are not supplied.
Owners must be sure to bring some with them from home to assist them with cleaning up after their pets. Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area is a public facility. There is no cost for Fido and his family to enjoy the premises. Though there is reportedly little shade at this stunning recreational space, there is plentiful seating available via picnic tables and benches.
Among the most popular activities at Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area are scuba diving and snorkeling at nearby Garden Eel Cove as well as sunbathing and leisurely beach strolls. There are several trails on the grounds which meander through the lush community gardens.
Sea turtles can often be seen lounging on the beach. Owners must take care that their dogs do not disturb them. They are protected under Hawaii law, and there is a penalty for any harm done to them. It is important to note that due to the current of the water, swimming is not recommended at this beach.
Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area supports and enforces all Hawaii state law. To this end, all dogs visiting this lovely state park must be up to date on vaccinations.
