Both the Shawnee State Park and the Shawnee State Forest historically sit in the area where the Shawnee Indians originally lived and hunted. Additionally, the Shawnee Indians traded in silver and in fact, historians say that the word Shawnee means ‘those who have silver.' The land where the park sits was originally purchased in 1922 and was operated as the Theodore Roosevelt State Game Preserve. The park was later renamed the Shawnee State Park after the creation of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Division of Parks and Recreation in 1949.
Activities that are enjoyed at the Shawnee State Park include fishing, swimming, camping, golf, boating, ice fishing, nature programs, and hiking. Amenities to facilitate these activities include lodges, 18-hole golf course, bike rentals, amphitheater, cottages, boat ramps, hiking trails, swimming beach, game courts, picnic areas and picnic shelters, camper cabins, restaurant, playground, fuel dock, marina, campsites, food concession, miniature golf, and boat rentals.
The Shawnee State Park is also among the few Ohio State parks that include specifically designated dog-friendly facilities including lodges, yurts, and cabins. That said, standard Ohio State Park rules with regard to pets/dogs apply. Some of the specific rules relating to dogs include the following. Your dog must always be on a leash no longer than six feet long. If you decide to camp at the park, you must observe a pet/dog limit of only two per campsite. Additionally, you must avoid park buildings that are not designated as pet-friendly areas.
